Migration has been taken over by mass panic. Newspapers, television, radio, and social media all include stories on migration. It now dominates headlines to the point that no one can avoid hearing about migration on a daily basis.

The volume of information the public is exposed to in quantitative terms is not the primary determinant of migration’s pervasiveness. It’s also nourished by the sort of information delivered and the way it’s depicted in the media.

Migrants are frequently presented in terrifying and emotive terms as an uncontrollable mass inflow that threatens national values, identity, and security. ‘The international dread of terror has overlapped and entwined with the fear of illegal migration as a result of this effervescence.’ This familiar chant warns us that the rich West is under assault, and that the hordes are approaching.’

This book gives a deep and complete review of the international legal system that governs cross-border movement of people. International law’s position in this subject is complicated and frequently ambiguous: there is no one source of international law guiding migration. The existing framework is strewn over a slew of regulations including refugee law, human rights law, humanitarian law, labour law, commerce law, marine law, criminal law, and consular law.

This textbook demystifies the subject by illustrating what contemporary international law is and evaluating how it works. The book provides a thorough and unique review of this rapidly expanding topic of international migration law.

It pulls together and critically examines treaty, customary, and soft law standards on a wide range of topics, including irregular migration, human trafficking, refugee protection, labour migration, non-discrimination, regional free movement schemes, and global migration governance.

It also focuses on specific categories of migrants, such as migrant laborers, refugees, smuggled migrants, and human trafficking victims. It depicts the current state of the law controlling their mobility, offering a careful critical examination of the different strands of international law that apply to them and speculating on how the law could evolve in the future.
